The American ladies have at least one more chance to make a playoff run despite an 8-5 loss to Scotland this afternoon at the 2013 Titlis Glacier Mountain World Women's Curling Championship.

Erika Brown and the U.S. women (5-5) need to defeat Russia (6-4) in the round robin finale tonight to force a tiebreaker game for the fourth and final playoff spot. The U.S. has not made a playoff appearance at the Women's World Championship since 2007. Sweden (10-1), Scotland (10-1) and Canada (8-3) have locked down the first three playoff berths.

"Let's just go and win our next one. We control our own destiny so we're going to go out there and make lots of shots," said Brown, a seven-time U.S. national champion.

Brown (Oakville, Ontario) and teammates Debbie McCormick (Rio, Wis.), Jessica Schultz (Richfield, Minn.) and Ann Swisshelm (Chicago) lost their fifth game of the week at the Volvo Sports Center. Today's loss was at the hands of a team that has now won nine games in a row - Scotland's Eve Muirhead rink.

Team USA survived the round robin finale to play another day at the 2013 Titlis Glacier Mountain World Women's Curling Championship.

Erika Brown and the American women defeated Russia, 6-5, tonight in an extra end at the Volvo Sports Center to secure a spot in tomorrow's tiebreaker to try to get to the Page playoff 3-4 game. The USA win, coupled with Switzerland's 8-5 victory over Denmark, created a three-way tie for fourth place between USA, Russia and Switzerland. All three teams have an equal win-loss record amongst one another so the next level to break the tie goes to the cumulative draw shot challenge. This went in USA's favor so the Americans will have the bye while Russia and Switzerland play at 9 a.m. The winner moves on to play Team USA at 2 p.m. tomorrow.

"Nothing like a little drama! We were having a hard time getting the deuce and were praying for one in some of those ends with the hammer," Brown said after the win.

Brown (Oakville, Ontario) and teammates Debbie McCormick (Rio, Wis.), Jessica Schultz (Richfield, Minn.) and Ann Swisshelm (Chicago) finished the round robin with a 6-5 record. Sweden, Scotland and Canada have earned the first three playoff spots. Russia's Anna Sidorova rink tied the game in the 10th, but the U.S. team made all of its shots when it mattered the most and won the game on Brown's final stone of the extra end.

"We were tight on time too so that always adds a little bit of stress as well. It was nice to get the clock refreshed and get nine minutes," Brown said about the 10th and subsequent extra end. "I think we all knew that even when the momentum was not in our favor out there, everyone stayed positive and believed we were going to win it. It just took a little longer that we'd hoped."

The USA ladies are taking care of business at the 2013 Titlis Glacier Mountain World Women’s Curling Championship. Erika Brown led Team USA to a lopsided 9-2 victory this morning over host Latvia at the Volvo Sports Center.

Brown (Oakville, Ontario) and teammates Debbie McCormick (Rio, Wis.), Jessica Schultz (Richfield, Minn.) and Ann Swisshelm (Chicago) have outscored their last two opponents, 19-5, and the Americans improved to 5-3 in the round robin standings.

“Today we just made a lot of precision shots and put the rocks in really tough places. Latvia was forced to make some really difficult shots in the early ends and came up a little bit short,” Brown said.

In a game all about draw weight, China outlasted the Americans this afternoon as the round robin comes into the home stretch at the 2013 Titlis Glacier Mountain World Women's Curling Championship.

Ahead by a point late in the game, Erika Brown and Team USA gave up five points in the ninth end to go down in defeat to China's Bingyu Wang, 9-5, at the Volvo Sports Center.

Fourteen of Brown's 18 shots played were draws, mostly around multiple guards or stones into the four-foot. It was her last one in the ninth end, however, that proved to be the knockout punch for the Chinese.

"I felt like we were in control most of the game. Even if I can make a really great shot in nine, it would have gotten us out of that end," said Brown, 40, a native of Madison, Wis. "We just had a couple misses up the line, and they took advantage of it in the ninth."

The monkey is off Team USA’s back. It had been seven years since the American women defeated Canada at a world championship. That came to a halt as Team USA made a takeout to defeat its neighbors to the north, 5-4, tonight at the 2013 Titlis Glacier Mountain World Women’s Curling Championship.

The last time the American women beat Canada at the World Championships was in 2006 in Grande Prairie, Alberta, which also was the last time the American women medalled at a world championship.

Tonight’s game was high on tension as an extra end was needed for Erika Brown (Oakville, Ontario) and teammates Debbie McCormick (Rio, Wis.), Jessica Schultz (Richfield, Minn.) and Ann Swisshelm (Chicago) to defeat Rachel Homan’s rink at the Volvo Sports Center.

“We played a lot sharper. We gave ourselves a good talking to after yesterday with the two losses,” said Brown, who is playing in her eighth world women’s championship. “We knew we had to get it going and get back in the win column. Everyone was just fired up and ready to go today.”
