USA sweeps past Sweden to earn second win

April 3, 2012
The Swedish word for the day is ful, which translates to an ugly outing by the formerly undefeated rink led by Sebastain Kraupp as Team USA swept past the Swedes, 10-1, in a lopsided victory this morning at the 2012 Men's World Championship at St. Jakobshalle.

With the win, Heath McCormick (Sarnia, Ontario) and teammates Bill Stopera (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.), Martin Sather (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) and Dean Gemmell (Short Hills, N.J.) improve to 2-4 in the round robin standings. Sweden is now 5-1.

"The Swedes are certainly one of the favorites here after Canada so that was a big win," said Gemmell, 44, a writer from New Jersey who was raised in Canada. "But our skipper kept us in through two ends and then we started to get better after that. They [Sweden] didn't have their best day so that was fortunate."

Sweden, playing without skip Niklas Edin, who is suffering from a disc hernia and sciatica, which causes nerve pain in his back, entered today's game boasting a perfect 5-0 record and through the first two ends looked to have early control of the match with the Americans.
