USA seeking first men's world title in more than 3 decades

March 27, 2012
Team USA's skip for the 2012 World Men's Championship was just a toddler the last time the U.S. won the men's world championship title. Heath McCormick and Team USA will try to become the first team since 1978 to win the world title as play gets underway this Saturday at St. Jackobshalle in Basel, Switzerland.

Twelve teams will contend for the world title as well as 2014 Olympic Winter Games qualifying points. This is the first event for nations to begin earning 2014 Olympic points.

Team USA's journey begins on Saturday afternoon as the round robin gets underway. McCormick (Sarnia, Ontario) and teammates Bill Stopera (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.), Martin Sather (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.), Dean Gemmell (Short Hills, N.J.) and Craig Brown (Madison, Wis.) begin play against Germany's John Jahr rink at 2 p.m. (local time) Saturday. They are coached by Matt Hames (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Scott Baird (Bemidji, Minn.).
