USA rebounds with big win over New Zealand
Heath McCormick (Sarnia, Ontario) and teammates Craig Brown (Madison, Wis.), Bill Stopera (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.), Dean Gemmell (Short Hills, N.J.) and Martin Sather (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) put the brakes on New Zealand's three-game win streak as Peter de Boer's team was inching towards its first-ever playoff appearance.
"That feels good, but we couldn't feel much worse," McCormick said. "We just played a little bit better and got some good breaks. Billy played great. He moved down to second, and I'd be hard-pressed to find a shot he missed."
The win improves Team USA to 3-6 with two games remaining on tap tomorrow in the round robin. "We needed some confidence, for sure. We're, obviously, playing a much tougher team tomorrow, but if we can play similar to the way we did tonight, we should be in the game at least," McCormick said about the 2 p.m. match-up with Scotland (6-3) tomorrow. The Americans finish out the round robin with the Czech Republic at 7 p.m.
