USA finishes 8th at 2012 Men's World Championship
With the defeat of Jiri Snitil's team, Heath McCormick (Sarnia, Ontario) and teammates Craig Brown (Madison, Wis.), Bill Stopera (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.), Dean Gemmell (Short Hills, N.J.) and Martin Sather (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) finish with a 4-7 overall record and earn five points for the United States toward qualifying for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
"It was a nice way to end a disappointing week," McCormick said. "I think we're all going to learn something, and hopefully we'll get back at this and use these experiences for future world championships and the Olympic Trials. My guys have not played in a lot of big events, and we have not all played in a world championship before so I think everybody learned a few things on and off the ice so I think we'll be better if we get the opportunity again."
Canada (10-1) and Scotland (8-3) will meet in the Page playoff 1-2 game at 2 p.m. Saturday. Norway (8-3) is the No. 3 seed and will await the winner of tomorrow afternoon's tiebreaker game between Sweden (7-4) and New Zealand (7-4) for its opponent in the Page 3-4 match-up at 9 a.m. Saturday. The winner of the Page playoff 1-2 game moves on to Sunday's gold-medal match, while the losing side plays the winner of the 3-4 game in Saturday night's semifinal.
